Railway Engineering Specialized Group was formed in mid-2003. It was made a Railway Section after a re-structuring of the IEE Hong Kong Branch in mid-2004. In October 2011, the “Railway Section” was renamed as “Railway and Transport Section” (RTS) to align with the sectors of focus of the IET. The focus areas of RTSC include air transport, aerodrome and aviation electronics, automotive and road transport, autonomous vehicles, energy efficiency, future transport technologies, intelligent mobility, railway and marine transport, offering members a more comprehensive range of activities on all modes of transport.
The International Conference on Railway Engineering (ICRE) has been the flagship event of the Railway & Transport Section (RTS) for more than a decade. The first ICRE took place in 2005 during the early times of RTS when it was still called the Railway Section. The conference was met with encouraging success thus since then RTS has been organizing this conference every three years in Hong Kong. The mission of ICRE is to provide a platform where railway professionals from all parts of the World can gather to share and learn amongst themselves. Since 2005, through the hard works of many dedicated volunteers, speakers and sponsors, ICRE has gained recognition attracting railway professionals from all around the World, it even caught the eyes of IET in the UK. Shortly after the ICRE in 2014, RTS was approached by the Railway Technical Professional Network (TPN) of IET UK to discuss the possibility of having more ICREs held in Europe in between the 3 year cycle in Hong Kong. Again, with the dedication of many IET volunteers, ICRE 2016 was successfully held in Brussel and with ICRE 2018 to be held in London, the context of the term “International” in ICRE has gained a new perspective.
