Late 2017, Innovation and Technology Bureau (ITB), HKSAR Government released a “Hong Kong Smart City Blueprint” including short-, medium- and long-term recommendations, based on her consultant study. Smart City is a vision of urban development. The Blueprint identified facing challenges, unique local situation, strengths and opportunities ahead in Hong Kong. It also outlined plans for next five years, and beyond to transform Hong Kong to a greener, cleaner, livable, sustainable and competitive city.
To foster Smart City development, since 2014, we held our annual Informatics and Control Technologies (ICT) conferences, a yearly flagship event in our section, with themes of Digitalization, Smart City and more. They attracted a lot of participants from academics, government departments or industrial professionals to share their insights and experience in the conferences.
In the 2014 and 2015 annual conferences, our keynote speakers delivered strategic directions and applications of ICT developments and Smart City in Hong Kong, such as the government funding for Energized Kowloon East Projects. To keep pace with digital transformation, the updated trend and ICT applications including Government services, eHealth and Building Information Modelling (BIM) were also discussed. To share successful showcases, an electric utility presented her Internet of Things (IoT) related applications and associated energy saving initiatives.
As fruitful feedback on previous annual conferences was received from technical communities, 2016 and 2017 annual conferences were held. Their themes further focused on sustainability development of Smart City. Different stakeholders not only shared the latest ICT development but also stressed the importance of Smart City in Hong Kong. To inspire the technology innovation ideas, some topics ranging from the development of cellular network infrastructure to electric vehicle development were gone through with the participants. With some showcases of Big Data Analytics applications, benefits of Smart transportation, Smart Home, Smart Charging were further elaborated to those conference participants.
Between 2014 and 2017, our invited keynoted speakers delivered cutting-edge ICT technologies including IoT and Big Data Analytics in the conferences. As such technologies evolved rapidly, the participants expressed strong concerns on confronting opportunities and challenges of Smart City and associated innovative Smart applications. As ICT conference was well-recognized as a knowledge sharing platform in the technical community, our section will continue to contribute our efforts on organizing this flagship event to promote the exchange of engineering knowledge in ICT areas.
Lastly, we would like to express sincere gratitude to those distinguished speakers including government officials, Legco members, industry experts, academic members to share their valuable experience and ideas on those theme topics. This not only shared the experience and knowledge in technical communities but also transforming Hong Kong to an ICT-enabled smart city.
